The Phone of tomorrow is close to u:Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is only Samsung’s third flagship foldable phone, but one look at its spec sheet and you will probably think Samsung has been doing this for a lot longer. Last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 was already a great device, with a ton of improvements over the original Fold, and Samsung has taken things up a few notches with the Z Fold 3.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 feels ultra-premium in the hand, especially with that matte finish on the black version and the redesigned camera bump. The body is stronger thanks to what Samsung calls Armor Aluminum, and like the Z Fold 2, Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus protects the back and the cover display. The main display still uses ultra-thin glass, but Samsung has increased durability by 80% by improving the plastic film that sits on top.

The biggest design change is completely invisible, of course: The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is IPX8 rated, which means it can survive submersion in up to 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. The Z Fold 3 features Flex Mode, so you can unfold it at an angle. And the phone feels rock solid and has no play or wiggle when you do that. Flex Mode is great for hands-free video calls, shooting long-exposure pictures in the camera’s Night mode, or capturing beautiful time-lapse videos; in various apps, it puts important controls on one half of the screen for quicker control

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 sees no change in display sizes – there’s a 6.2-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch folding display. The 7.6 inches of viewing area is big enough to make everything from browsing through gaming to watching videos enjoyable.Naturally, the best thing about the big display is that it provides a large canvas for writing and drawing with the S Pen.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 packs Qualcomm’s latest top-of-the-line Snapdragon 888 chipset. The 5nm SoC includes one Kryo 680 prime core (ARM Cortex X1-based) clocked at 2.84GHz, three Kryo 680 performance cores (ARM Cortex A78-based) clocked at 2.4GHz, and four Kryo 680 efficiency cores (ARM Cortex A55-based) clocked at 1.8GHz. It also includes an Adreno 660 GPU.

The Snapdragon 888 on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is paired with 12GB of LPDDR RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1  storage. Unfortunately, the phone doesn’t have a dedicated microSD card slot for expansion, so make sure you buy the higher-end 512GB variant if you need the extra storage.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 retains the same triple camera setup as its predecessor. The phone features a 12MP f/1.8 primary camera with Dual Pixel Auto-focus and optical image stabilization (OIS), a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera with a 123° field of view, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with PDAF, Dual OIS, 2x optical zoom, and 10x digital zoom.Another thing the Galaxy Z Fold 3 has in common with the Fold 2 is it has two selfie cameras. The phone features a 10MP f/2.2 selfie shooter housed within a hole-punch cutout on the outer display and a 4MP f/1.8 sensor on the inside.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 battery features a slightly smaller 4,400mAh dual-cell battery, while the Fold 2 featured a 4,500mAh unit. But that’s to be expected, as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a bit more compact than the older model. As far as charging is concerned, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 features 25W wired fast charging support and 10W wireless charging support.

S Pen Pro is a bit larger and offers a host of additional features. It’s an active stylus that can be charged via the USB Type-C port on the top, and it supports Bluetooth controls, air gestures, a new copy/paste functionality using the onboard storage, device switching, and more. It also features a retractable tip like the S Pen Fold Edition.

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 runs Android 11 out of the box with Samsung’s One UI skin on top. It offers all the features you get with Android 11, along with a couple of extras that will help you make the most of the foldable display. These include UX optimizations for Samsung’s stock apps, the option to pin Edge Panels to the screen for easier access to apps, optimizations for split-screen view, etc.
